Mark Thompson, a seasoned veteran in the realm of news, is set to take the reins as the next CEO and chairman of CNN, a strategic move by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. This appointment comes mere months after the departure of Chris Licht.
With a remarkable four decades of experience in the news industry, Thompson brings with him a wealth of knowledge. He notably held the positions of CEO and president of The New York Times between 2012 and 2020. Additionally, he served as director-general of the BBC from 2004 to 2012, further cementing his authority in the media landscape.
David Zaslav, the chief executive officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, expressed his enthusiasm for Thompson’s appointment, stating, “There isn’t a more experienced, respected, or capable executive in the news business today than Mark, and we are thrilled to have him join our team and lead CNN Worldwide into the future.” The announcement was made through a news release on Wednesday, underlining the significance of Thompson’s role in steering CNN’s trajectory.
