YouTube has taken a major step by suspending monetization on Russell Brand’s channel due to multiple allegations of sexual assault. This means no more ads alongside his videos, affecting his revenue generated from views. Brand, once a mainstream figure, has become an internet commentator with 6.61 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel.
All channels under Brand’s ownership have been suspended from the YouTube Partner Program due to “serious allegations against the creator.” His smaller channels, including Football is Nice, Awakening With Russell, and Stay Free With Russell Brand, are also affected.
Brand vehemently denies all accusations, emphasizing that his relationships during the alleged incidents were consensual.
YouTube stated that this action is consistent with its “Creator Responsibility policy” when off-platform behavior harms users or its ecosystem. It’s worth noting that this move is considered “rare” but aligns with previous applications of the policy, as seen with influencers David Dobrik and James Charles.
It’s important to mention that YouTube creators can still make money through sponsorship deals with external parties.
Russell Brand, who has a significant online presence, has 3.8 million Instagram followers, 11.2 million on X (formerly Twitter), and 1.4 million on Rumble.
These allegations emerged through a joint investigation by Channel 4 and the Sunday Times, with four women sharing their accounts of alleged misconduct by Brand. CNBC has not independently confirmed these allegations.
As the controversy unfolds, London’s Metropolitan Police are aware of the allegations and have received reports of a sexual assault. Investigations are ongoing.
