Nigerian fintech companies, riding the wave of an ever-expanding market, are engaged in fierce competition to attract and upskill top talents.
Notable firms actively ramping up their recruitment efforts include Flutterwave, Moniepoint, OPay, Palmpay, and Paga.
Despite what may be considered a tumultuous year for many businesses, several fintech companies have thrived, reporting substantial growth in transaction volumes, transaction values, and a surge in new user acquisitions.
Moniepoint, for instance, boasts of over 1.6 million businesses utilizing its platform and has also ventured into the Kenyan fintech landscape as part of its expansion strategy.
Flutterwave, after its successful entry into new markets beyond Africa, has rekindled its ambitions to become a publicly listed company. OPay, on the other hand, has disclosed plans to apply for a digital bank license in Egypt.
With their eyes on the next phase of expansion, these companies are making concerted efforts to bolster their workforce.
Flutterwave recently unveiled its inaugural “Engineering Mobility Programme” in India in collaboration with Capgemini, a global business and technology transformation services provider.
This program sees Flutterwave’s engineering teams in Nigeria and the UK partnering with Capgemini’s extensive technology talent pool in Bangalore, India. Their aim is to exchange industry best practices and nurture the next generation of fintech talent.
Gbenga Agboola, founder and CEO of Flutterwave, expressed, “We’re sending engineers from our offices in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt to Capgemini’s offices in Bangalore, providing a unique opportunity for them to exchange knowledge and experience as well as discover new cultures and ways of innovating for emerging economies.”
This announcement closely follows Flutterwave’s revelation that it had absorbed nearly 85 percent of its 299 graduate trainees following the conclusion of the inaugural program.
Moniepoint also marked the graduation of its pioneer cohort from the HatchDev program—a specialized nine-month training initiative aimed at producing a steady stream of market-ready software engineers annually.
Recognizing the talent shortage in Nigeria, where there are only 115,000 developers, Moniepoint is taking proactive steps to bridge this gap, especially as the company has continental ambitions. The partnership with Nithub for the program provides access to a pool of software engineering talent.
The program, which commenced in October 2022, aims to shape 300 junior software engineers, 100 intelligent systems developers, and 100 IoT embedded systems engineers. Moniepoint envisions that these professionals, once they complete the course, will be readily absorbed into a market hungry for their expertise.
Chukwudum Ekwueme, Vice President of Engineering at Moniepoint, noted, “Nigeria is a booming economy, and with the innovative contributions of tech businesses like Moniepoint that are solving some of society’s critical issues, it is very gratifying to be a significant part of those giving local talent the training and tools they need to compete on a global stage.”
In September, OPay and PalmPay also actively sought to expand their teams with diverse job openings. Paga, too, has various positions available, including senior software engineer, software engineer, inside sales consultant, and sales executive.
