In a resolute move to address environmental challenges, the Lagos State government has taken decisive action by sealing both the Mile 12 International Market and the Owode Onirin Market. These measures are a direct response to the environmental malfeasance witnessed in these areas.
The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, located in Ikeja, conveyed that the closure of these markets became necessary due to the widespread issues of indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, the deplorable state of the environment, and clogged drainage systems.
Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, took the lead in directing the Lagos Waste Management Agency and the ‘KAI’ (Kick Against Indiscipline) team to take swift action in sealing the markets.
This action is a direct result of the numerous complaints regarding the indiscriminate disposal of waste, the overall unsanitary conditions, and the obstruction of drainage systems. Additionally, illegal parking and the abandonment of trucks along the highways leading to these markets have caused significant traffic disruptions.
This bold move underscores the Lagos State government’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for its citizens and addressing the issues that have long plagued these vital markets. Stay tuned for updates as the cleanup efforts progress.
