In a surprising move, the Nigerian Senate has given its green light to the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary budget, defying widespread public concerns. This budget, which has sparked controversy due to its provisions for a presidential yacht and luxury vehicles for the First Lady’s office, a role not constitutionally recognized, has now been approved.
Controversial Spending Sparks Outrage
President Bola Tinubu had urgently called for the Senate’s approval of the Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2023 in a letter dated Tuesday, citing the need to address pressing national issues.
Under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, the Senate passed the bill following their consideration of the harmonized report from the Senate and House Committee on Appropriation. This report was presented on the Senate floor by Solomon Adeola, the Senator representing Ogun West.
Key Highlights of the Approved Budget
The budget, as sanctioned by the Senate, includes the widely criticized allocation of N5.09 billion for a presidential yacht, N2.9 billion for sport utility vehicles for the Presidential Villa, and an additional N2.9 billion for the replacement of operational vehicles for the presidency.
In summary, the approved budget allocates N18 billion for statutory transfers, N992.8 billion for recurrent expenditure, and a significant N1.16 trillion for the development fund dedicated to capital expenditure.
The decision to approve this budget, despite public outcry, has left many questioning the Senate’s priorities and allocation of resources.
