In a bid to combat insecurity at mining sites and propel sector growth, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, unveils cutting-edge security strategies.
In an exclusive interview with BusinessDay, Alake addresses the challenge of insecurity hindering the sector’s progress. He outlines plans, in collaboration with the National Security Advisor and the Ministry of Defence, to establish a highly technological security outfit. This marks a significant departure from traditional methods, emphasizing the importance of technology in addressing both kinetic and non-kinetic aspects of security.
Alake underscores the dynamic nature of the new security outfit, incorporating artificial intelligence to pinpoint flashpoints efficiently. This approach aims to eliminate the inefficiencies of traditional methods, ensuring security experts with theoretical and practical expertise lead the initiative.
Recognizing the pivotal role of data in sector development, Alake emphasizes the government’s commitment to investing in the generation and certification of geoscientific data. This move is designed to boost investor confidence by providing accurate and internationally certified data on mineral resources like gold and lithium.
Alake explains, “When they see your data… they will believe the data, especially when the data is certified by international agencies. That will make them or encourage them to make informed decisions about their investments.”
Addressing the regulatory landscape, Alake clarifies the exclusive legislative nature of mining activities, emphasizing that state governments lack constitutional authority for policy statements. However, he encourages states to participate as operators, applying for licenses and contributing through the standard process, reinforcing the federal government’s oversight.
As Nigeria advances into a tech-driven future for its mining sector, Alake’s initiatives signal a transformative shift, fostering confidence among investors and paving the way for sustainable development in the country’s mineral resources.
