In a groundbreaking move unveiled at COP28, Oando Clean Energy (OCEL), the renewable energy arm of Oando Energy Resources, is spearheading Nigeria’s push for a greener future by acquiring 100 electric vehicles (EVs).
In addition to the 50 EVs destined for Lagos State, Oando is extending its commitment with an extra 50 EVs to be distributed across Cross River, Kaduna, and Edo States.
The announcement follows the success of OCEL’s Sustainable Transport initiative, launched in collaboration with Lagos State through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). Ademola Ogunbanjo, OCEL’s Executive Vice President, shared the positive outcomes of the 90-day Proof-of-Concept (PoC) phase at the Nigeria pavilion.
During the PoC, two electric mass transit buses covered over 43,800 kilometers, transporting 73,000 passengers, saving 21,000 liters of diesel, and curbing 57.8 tons of CO2 emissions in Lagos State.
Oando’s Sustainable Transport initiative is now advancing to a pilot phase with 50 buses, aiming for a full rollout of 2,000 buses in Lagos State.
President/CEO of Oando Clean Energy, Ainojie ‘Alex’ Irune, expressed pride in leading the sustainable transit expansion, emphasizing the company’s alignment with the Federal Government’s commitment to deploy 100 electric buses.
In a further stride towards sustainability, Oando signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cross River State for an electric vehicle assembly plant, EV supply for mass transit, and a 100 MW wind plant for power generation.
Additionally, Oando announced a strategic partnership with CarbonAi, a leading provider of greenhouse gas reduction services, marking a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of its oil and gas operations.
Salisu Dahiru, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), praised Oando’s proactive role in the energy transition, noting that private sector players like Oando are crucial in advancing Nigeria’s sustainable goals.
As Oando takes the lead in Nigeria’s green journey, the company’s initiatives align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to modernize the nation’s transportation systems and reduce carbon emissions.
With this bold move, Oando sets a high standard for private sector engagement in Nigeria’s green revolution, fostering a cleaner and eco-friendly transportation system for the nation.
